Pre-16 (Alternative Curriculum)

This programme is designed to meet the needs of students who have not been attending school on a regular basis.

Referrals to this programme will come from a learner's school or education provider and are processed via the Pre-16 Foundation Learning Panel.

Learners choose tasters from the vocational areas offered at Palmersville Training. The programme focuses on practical learning and offers an alternative to the classroom environment. Learners are given support by experienced training staff to help them re-engage with learning.

All learners on are expected to follow an accredited programme.

Attendance
This is negotiable to meet the learner's needs.

Qualifications
Learners work towards a Vocational Qualification or equivalent in their chosen area.

Course Content
The emphasis is entirely on practical skills but there will be an amount of theory to be completed depending on the qualification undertaken.

Y12/13 Shared Learning

This programme is for Year 12 and 13 learners who want to work towards a Vocational Qualification at the same time as continuing their education at school.

Learners attend a Work-Based Learning Provider for up to three days each week and can choose from a range of vocational areas available.

This course can be offered as a one or two year programme, ie year 12 or 13 or both.

Attendance
Learners attend 5 days per week split between a work based learning provider and school during Years 12 and 13. The actual number days in each will depend upon the course taken at the school.

Qualifications
Award/Certificate/Diploma at Level 1 or 2.

Course Content
This course has a solid practical foundation, the theory element will include portfolio building and for some students completion of technical certificates and functional skills.

11 Programme

The majority of learners who join the Year 11 Programme have progressed from the Year 10 Programme. However, the programme is also open to learners wishing to attend work based learning for the first time in Year 11.

Learners select one vocational area in which they wish to specialise.

For some learners it is appropriate to use an external work placement to enable them to gain a real experience of the work place. However other learners may benefit more from developing their skills within the training centre before moving to and external work placement.

Attendance
Learners attend for one day per week for the full academic year

Course Content
All programmes provide practical learning with some theory and portfolio building.

Year 10 Programme

Business1

This programme provides the opportunity for Year 10 learners to attend work based learning one day a week.

From a range of vocational areas available learners are asked to choose 3 in which they are interested. They spend 6-7 weeks completing a "taster" in each chosen area. At the end of the third vocational area they are asked to choose just one taster as their specialism and work towards gaining a Level 1 or Level 2 qualification.

Attendance
Learners attend for one day a week during Year 10.

Course Content
There is the expectation that once learners have completed their inhouse induction they will move on to an external placement to develop and enhance the skills needed.
